Concerning articles: is it a one/ an one?

I've finished Bram Stoker's "Dracula" recently and Van Helsing's incessant use of the phrase "an one" was a real bother to me. I've always assumed it should be "a one" seeing as most people pronounce "one" as if it starts with a "w". Am I wrong, or does this instance allow for some leniency?
