Do people see why it would be necessary or advantageous for human beings to invent God?

For a traditional believer that doesn't believe that God was invented by humans, can you at least conceive of the utility or reasons behind such an invention--or does a belief in God completely rule out any possibility that humans invented this concept, based on whatever advantageous reasons they had for doing so at the time. Certainly there are some advantages or utility for a God to enter the picture (comfort about death, made up answers to the unexplainable for comfort, reasons for morality,etc). If you're a Nietzsche reader, then you probably know of a myriad of reasons why people would want to invent an all powerful God.
