Getting fired and child support?

Please help!!! My boyfriend heard from his co-workers that he is going to be fired...he has $687.00 taken out of his check for child support per month. What happens when he is fired and unfortunately has to apply for unemployment? Does the court system give him any leniency on his monthly payment? He has two children and they are here for 50 % of the time. Thank you for any positive help!
