How do I get a patent for a new invention?

And how would one promote a certain product? I mean I know through advertisements and such, but say I've invented a new household product. How would I get it to sell? Should I go to local household itemed stores and sell my products there? Or should I first try to promote it on its own with salespeople and ads?
